We are living in the Year of the Dragon which promises good fortune, wealth, prosperity and longevity. The Dragon was the symbol of imperial power. The throne of China’s emperors, from the days of Qin Shi Huangdi until the death of Empress Dowager Cixi, was known as the Dragon Throne. Of the twelve animals featured in the Chinese calendar, only the Dragon could be called “legendary.” There are five dragons: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. This year belongs to the Water Dragon, which Jackie Tahara beautifully illustrated in the Terracotta Warrior guarding 588 Burrard Street.
