I think we have the greatest ability to travel far, simply by staying in place.
Twyla Tharp, the American dancer and choreographer who lives and works in New York City said: “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” It seems that there are ways to travel without the use of a plane, train or automobile. What better place to find art but at an Art Gallery? Today, I met the Cone sisters.
They say that Claribel and Etta Cone recognized the future – our future – and preserved masterpieces for the world. Best friends with Gertrude and Leo Stein, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, the sisters travelled the world collecting beautiful things. Claribel and Etta were skilled shoppers, with the money to spend, spend and spend some more. They may have looked like proper ladies in their Victorian attire, but they were fearless, determined and passionate about art. They came on the scene at an extraordinary time, and moved in cities where radical and avant garde was commonplace.
The months of September and October, ChasingART will be celebrating the indomitable Cone sisters. They saw what others did not see; they loved what others thought was shameless, senseless and even infantile; they supported unknown artists before they were discovered.
A good weekend.
Greeting, Wolfgang

How wonderful to have had the money to buy, but also the discernment to choose!

And that is why I am absolutely fascinated by the Cone sisters. There were others that were in their financial circumstances, but they did not have the foresight to look forward. They were still looking towards the past. The question I ask myself – would I have been as astute or courageous as the Cone sisters?

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I’ve even asked myself if I would have gone with the shepherds to Bethlehem!
