With his death, the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang was said to have transformed into a powerful Dragon. From that time on, the Dragon became the symbol of empire, portrayed in imperial yellow with five claws on each foot. The dragon narrative, however, pre-dates the First Emperor by decades. Legend has it that a carp swam up waterways against the current as far as the pinnacle of a mountain. Reaching the summit, the carp leapt over the last obstacle – the Dragon Gate – before turning into a dragon as a reward for refusing to give up its quest.
Herman Zheng’s warrior is well named: “Mystical East, Ancient Land of Civilization.” China’s vast beauty and enduring traditions have an enticing mystery that fascinates and stimulates our imagination. Even today, dragons are revered by Chinese people who often call themselves descendants of the Dragon.
