(December 3, 1755 – July 9, 1828)  One of America’s foremost portraitists.

 

Brilliant and temperamental, Gilbert Stuart was a prolific painter, even though he sustained bouts of depression that confined him to his bed for several weeks.  He is famous for his portraits of the first six presidents of the United States, most notably, George Washington
