Façade Festival 2019

The music and crowd chatter filled the space of the city blocks that surround the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Façade Festival, a monumental public art project and cultural event, is in progress. It is a visual celebration of light, colour, music that fills the September night air with a vibrant energy that surges, intensifies and wanes, with the shifting moods of the presentation.

This is art that comes to the street where we walk, work, live. Art in action. Art that calls out to our creative spirits inviting us to connect – visually, emotionally – recognizing our place within an eclectic world that thrives on diversity and discovery.

Thank you for joining me on location at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

“A selection of BC contemporary artists, both established and early-career, have been commissioned to create ten stunning, site-specific works of art. Using the technology known as ‘projection mapping’, the works have been tailored specifically for the Vancouver Art Gallery’s iconic architecture, and will be projected over its Georgia Street façade, covering the building with moving, dynamic artwork. Façade Festival is an immersive, large-scale artistic experience that will be shared by tens of thousands of attendees.”

Fascinating… is this feast of light and sound still called Son et Lumier?
I saw this effect first back in the late fifties, when it was staged at Greenwich Naval Hospital, the glorious building commissioned by Charles11 and designed by Christopher Wren. We sat on the grass on the hill behind it, where Queen Elizabeth 1 used to ride … very primitive compared with your city festival… which sounds such fun, with such a sense of community.

I just looked up the name “Son et Lumiere” – I had never heard of that title, but once I checked out the videos in my Google search, I can say that the Facade fits under that umbrella. Thank you for the introduction – you sent me on a marvelous mini “research project” that took me back to the first son et lumiere in 1952 and one in at the Great Pyramid of Giza in 1960. Every generation leaves their mark, and it is usually built upon the accomplishments of others who have gone before. I was delighted to see your comment this morning. The best way to start my day.

    Glorious imagery!
I was just reading your post on Piontek but there was no where to comment. My maternal grandmother was a Piontek which translates into ‘time,’ which is quite fitting for her art. All of this is quite synchronistic don’t you think!

Hi Cindy – I’ll check into the post. I am on my mobile so don’t have full access to the post attributes of Lacuna 2018. I knew that you would like this public art. But how wonderful to find out that your maternal grandmother was a Piontek. We live is a vast world that has the capacity to engage all of us. Hugs coming your way.

You would have loved being in the crowd. Lots of chatter and the aroma of food coming from the food trucks. I am looking into the idea of bring more videos to blogging. Remember your video of being in the woods? I felt I was there with you.

Thanks for joining me at the Facade Festival 2019. The birds came out of nowhere – there was a collective ahhh in the audience. I love when art comes to the street, to find us and enchant us with colour, sound, stories. It brings together communities, and lightens hearts in our complex environment. Hugs coming your way…
